Taiwan Compatriot Permit: Application Guide

Taiwan residents need a Taiwan Compatriot Permit to enter the mainland — a passport alone will not do.

What it is

Officially the 'Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents', a card since 2015. Issued by the Exit and Entry Administration; in Taiwan it is submitted through authorised agencies, and in Hong Kong it can be handled through China Travel Service.

Validity and where to apply

  • The card is generally valid five years (shorter for under-18s, as issued).
  • In Taiwan: through an authorised agency, with ID, household registration and photos.
  • In Hong Kong: through China Travel Service, convenient if you are already there.
  • At some mainland ports a one-off single-entry permit can be issued, but arrange the card in advance instead.
Apply early
  • Processing takes several working days, longer around holidays.
  • Renew if under six months' validity remains — do not leave it to the last minute.
  • Current fees, documents and authorised agencies are set by the latest official notice.

Using it inside the mainland

  • Choose hotels licensed to accept Taiwan travellers — we confirm before booking.
  • Rail tickets, phone SIMs and bank accounts all use the permit for real-name registration.
  • Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit and travel with an agency-arranged guide.
  • Some Xinjiang border areas need additional permits, which we check in advance.

Internet and communication

Taiwan travellers commonly choose between roaming on their existing number, buying a mainland SIM, or installing an eSIM before departure. What each can reach differs — see our internet and payment guide.

Common requests from Taiwan guests

A Mandarin-speaking guide throughout, LINE or WhatsApp contact during the trip, and adjustments to food preferences. We confirm all of these before departure.
