The short answer
Mid-June to early July, and September, offer the best balance of weather, crowds, ticket availability and price. Late July and August are peak: the scenery is at its best but so are the crowds.
Month by month
- April: still cold (near freezing around Qinghai Lake) with snow on Qilian passes. Quiet, but the landscape is bare.
- May: warming up, grassland greening, the lake area still cool. An early-bird window with friendlier prices.
- June: one of our two recommended months. Stable weather, long daylight, rapeseed starting around Menyuan and the lake, crowds not yet at peak.
- July: fullest rapeseed bloom, most comfortable temperatures (15–24°C) — but school holidays make hotels and Mogao tickets tightest.
- August: similar to July but into the rainy season, with more afternoon showers near the lake. Still school holidays and busiest.
- September: the other recommended month. Noticeably fewer people than July–August, clear weather, grassland turning gold. Mogao tickets easier.
- October: early October is still good, but the National Day holiday (1–7 October) is extremely busy. Late October cools and Qilian passes can see snow.
- November to March: low season. The lake freezes and parts of the salt lakes close, while the Mogao Caves stay open but temperatures can reach -15°C.
Key moments to plan around
- Rapeseed: around Qinghai Lake in early to mid July, Menyuan early to mid July, about 20 days, shifting with temperatures.
- Danxia colour: Zhangye Danxia is richest in slanting afternoon light, so we book the afternoon slot.
- Salt lake reflections: Chaka is best at dawn and dusk; midday light is too harsh.
- Mogao tickets: tightest in July, August and the National Day holiday, often sold out a month ahead.
Choosing your dates
- Avoid late July to late August and 1–7 October and the experience improves markedly.
- If the rapeseed matters, go early July and book hotels early.
- If photography matters, go September: fewer people, stable light, good visibility.
- With elderly parents or children, avoid the hottest and busiest weeks — choose June or September.
What to pack
The plateau gives you winter mornings and summer middays. Even in July it can be 5–10°C at dawn by Qinghai Lake. The standard kit is a windproof outer layer, a warm mid-layer and a quick-dry base, plus a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. UV at altitude is strong enough to burn you on a cloudy day.
